Mother Leonarda Lentrup, SSpS came to the United States with less than a dollar's worth of change to her name. Thirty six years later God called her.
She left her adopted country with the blessings of her works: three hospitals, two Homes for the Elderly, one Retreat House, and one Home for Girls, ten schools, several seminary kitchens where her nuns still did the work, a large Provincial House in Techny, and hundreds of friends. All sensed the love of the Holy Spirit in her very demeanor. It is because of this closeness to the Holy Spirit that we can say of her with the author of Proverbs: "The woman who is wise is the one to praise."
Ann Gier entered the convent at the age of 14. At the age of 18, she became a Bride of Christ and changed her name to Sister Annamarie. She graduated from Holy Ghost Academy in 1942. She received her B.A. from DePaul University in 1949, with an English major and a Latin minor. In 1951, she received her B.A. from DePaul in creative writing. Ann Marie was a religious missionary in West Africa and Asia. She taught in Accra Ghana, West Africa; and Fu Jen University, Taipei, Taiwan. After returning to the U.S., she was employed at Roosevelt University in Chicago as Director of the English Program for foreign students. She eventually retired to Rockford to be near family. Ann Marie was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church and also attended St. Mary Oratory.
